Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - Medical Weight Loss Treatments

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist and is the compounded version of brand names Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. It is a type of medication originally developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes by controlling blood sugar. Semaglutide can also be used as a weight loss medication in obese or overweight patients with at least one weight-related condition. The medication works by mimicking a hormone in your body called GLP-1, which helps to stimulate the release of insulin, reduce the production of sugar by the liver, and regulate appetite.

Semaglutide is injected once a week. It comes in a vial. You will draw up the recommended dosage each time. You can administer the injection on your upper arm, abdomen (at least 2 inches from your belly button), or thigh. You should inject on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals. You should switch injection sites weekly. Your healthcare provider will guide you on the proper technique.

Store the vial in the refrigerator. Throw away used needles in a hard, closed container (i.e. coffee can, detergent container) and keep the container away from children and pets.

Semaglutide may start to show noticeable effects on weight loss within a few weeks of regular use. However, individual responses may vary. It’s essential to stay committed to healthy eating habits and physical activity to achieve the best and sustainable weight loss results.

After your consultation and labs we will have you come in for your first injection appointment. Thereafter, you are required to come in once monthly for a follow up exam and to continue on your medication. At this appointment we will check on your progress so that we can advise you on the dosing of the medication for the following weeks. Dosing can vary by week depending on your results and symptoms. Most importantly, failure to comply with our monthly check in requirement will result in us not refilling your prescription. This is for your safety.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and bloating.

Eat small, high-protein meals as digestion is slowed down while taking this medication. Avoid foods high in fat and limit alcohol intake as they may contribute to nausea and vomiting. If severe, please contact your healthcare provider.

Semaglutide improves blood sugar control. The average weight loss while taking Semaglutide was 15% of total body weight. In a study of almost 18,000 people, Semaglutide decreased the risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, or death) by 20%. Studies have also shown potent anti-inflammatory effects of semaglutide which strongly benefits cardiovascular (heart) and hepatic (liver) health.

Rapid weight loss can lead to a decrease in muscle mass due to the body breaking it down for energy. Muscle improves the effectiveness of insulin and more muscle mass boosts your metabolism. Additionally, loss of our muscle support makes aging more apparent. Because obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease, consistent exercise habits are vital to prevent rebound weight gain.

Make sure to drink at least 64 oz of water per day to avoid dehydration and constipation. Aim for around 100 g of protein per day from foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, lean meat, beans, etc. Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. This will help you feel fuller longer and prevent constipation. Avoid highly processed foods as they typically contain high levels of sugar and sodium, lots of additives, and unhealthy fats. Replace white bread and pasta with whole grain or wheat as they have a lower glycemic index (will cause less spikes in your blood sugar).

Obesity is associated with over 200 medical conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, sleep apnea, and more. It has also been shown to be linked to an increased risk of 13 different types of cancer. Obesity affects your mental health, with an increased incidence of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Semaglutide was shown to increase the incidence of thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. It is unknown whether it poses the same risk to humans. Those with an individual or family history of thyroid cancer (Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Semaglutide. Acute pancreatitis has been observed in patients being treated with semaglutide. Notify your healthcare provider if you develop severe upper abdominal pain (may radiate to the back) that will not go away with or without vomiting. Semaglutide has also been associated with an increased incidence of gallstones and inflammation of the gallbladder. Notify your healthcare provider if you develop upper abdominal pain, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools. Semaglutide lowers blood sugar and can cause hypoglycemia. Notify your healthcare provider if you notice signs of hypoglycemia (dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, or feeling jittery). There have been reports of acute kidney injury and worsening of chronic renal failure. In people with kidney issues, GI complications (nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea) can cause dehydration leading to worsening kidney function. It is important to drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. Semaglutide has been shown to increase resting heart rate. It may also cause vision changes. Notify your healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your vision.

Individual or family history of thyroid cancer (Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), have a history of or active pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, severe gastrointestinal disease, have a history of blood clots, are allergic to any of the ingredients in Semaglutide, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or under the age of 18.
